Sacred Poet Productions first publication

In addition to sharing other people's work published at Kindle, I'll also be sharing my own.

Via my publishing empire Sacred Poet Productions, I've begun publishing Freedom Seat Reviews, which is a journal of media reviews and articles on "adventurous women" - but with a special emphasis on aviation and pilots.

Unfortunately, although the journal itself is excellently written, proof-read and edited, et al, I was a bit amateurish in my Product Description for Kindle! Used "are" instead of "our" (hate it when that happens) and didn't think to list the reviews inclosed. I've gone into that page and edited the detail, but who knows how long it will take for it to show up on the page that the general public sees?

Well, that's a lesson I've learned for Issue 2.

Anyway, for anyone interested in aviation, and women in aviation in particular, please check it out.

The book reviews, which are critiques as well, are:

1. Wings Around the World: The Exhilarating Story Of One Woman's Epic Flight From the North Pole to Antarctica, by Polly Vacher
2. Flying Higher: The Women Airforce Service Pilots of World War II, by Wanda Langley
3. Night Witches: The Amazing Story of Russia's Women Pilots in World War II, by Bruce Myles
4. End Notes (in which I provide brief info on what each author/subject has been doig since the book's publication).

Working on catalog

Well... several days ago I uploaded my first offering to Kindle... it's still not available for purchase, which is really starting to annoy me. I'll give it until this Friday and then do some emailing...

I'm continuing my work on the SF catalog, which is available here:

Scars on the Face of God

This book doesn't quite meet the criteria for Kindle Kindlings, as I'd only wanted to feature books specifically published on Kindle and other ebook platforms, and its a horror book (well, horror/mystery), a genre for which I do not care, but it was submitted to me so I'll share it here.

Scars on the Face of God (fiction)
An aging church custodian/ex-con confronts an orphaned child who may or may not be the anti-Christ. Not blood & guts horror but rather a well-told story with horror and mystery elements. SOTFOG was inspired by THE DEVIL'S BIBLE, a massive surviving 13th century religious manuscript with legendary origins that include the Devil as co-author, the Devil having allegedly helped a monk complete it in one night

A portion of the sale of each copy will go to St. Vincent's Home in the Tacony section of Philadelphia, at one time an orphanage and now an emergency shelter for children.

More on Kindle Prices

I gotta tell ya, I am shocked by how much Amazon is charging for books for the Kindle.

If the books are copyright free, or the author is deceased, they don't charge so much - 99 cents or so.

But for new books - they cost as much as a print version! That's just not right! I suppose for some, textbooks, which they've had to pay to scan in photos and stuff, that's acceptable, but for plain old fiction?

That's why I'd suggest that authors who are self-publishing should charge only $3.99 at most for their books. Because people who've shelled out $350 for a Kindle will hardly be likely to buy a $15 ebook. I know I wouldn't!

Sure, you can make more with 1 purchase of a $15 book, then 1 purchase of a $3.99 book, but long after people have stopped buying the $15 book, income from the $3.99 will keep pouring in, and quickly surpass the more expensive version.

Magic and Conjuring Books on Kindle

Quite a few books are on Kindle in the Magic and Conjuring Fields. Some are priced inexpensively, some are priced higher than one would have thought. Nevertheless, I share them below:

Hiding the Elephant

The Secret Life of Houdini: America's first superhero

Houdini:
Miracle Mongers and Their Methods

The Mathematics of Juggling (for $31. Are you kidding me???) [Also, it's not actually a book on juggling, but on math, but the price is so outrageous that I thought I'd share it here anyway!)

Art and Artifice

The Glorious Deception: The Double Life of William Robinson as Chung Ling Soo, the Chinese Conjurer

Blackstone's Tricks Anyone Can Do

I've been browsing through Kindle offerings, and I must say I'm surprised at how much some of them cost. For new books, they seem to be priced only a couple of dollars less than print versions - $6.99 instead of $8.99 for example. Some books, like textbooks, cost over a hundred dollars for a Kindle version. That's ridiculous!

As regards print books, the actual cost to print the books wasn't that high. Depending on how many were printed at one time, it would be a quarter, or fifty cents, up to a couple of dollars if it was a hardback on glossy paper.

But most of the cost of print books goes to pay the "middle man" - the warehouses that store the books before shipping them to bookstores across country. Then the publishers get their cut, so they can make a profit, and what's left goes to the author.

With no middle man and no printing necessary, these books shouldn't be quite this high... I sincerely hope the author's royalties reflect this new reality!

Manifesto

Authors who didn't want the hassle of trying to get published through "real" publishers would often go the "vanity press" route. For most of them, their work would suffer because of lack of editor input, as well as a basic lack of proofreading.

Now that Kindle is on the scene, it's easier than ever for anyone to publish their material.

But Kindle readers are no likelier than those people who boycotted vanity press print works to purchase books or magazines or other ephemera if they have never heard of the author, or the publisher, before.

To that end, I have created Kindle Kindlings, a website where I will review the offerings from Kindle publishers - specifically those that are "self-published" as opposed to those from print publishers who are just migrating their titles over to the Kindle platform.

This blog will serve as a review space, and I also have a website at http://kindlekindlings.com.

If you are a publisher at Kindle, and would like your work reviewed either here or at my website, please submit your work to me at the address listed on the Kindle Kindlings website.

Be aware that I will review books impartially - if they are bad I will say so. If they are good I will say so.

So, let's get kindling!
